The UNC Eye Glaucoma Fellowship is led by Don Budenz, O’Rese Knight, Meredith Klifto and David Fleischman. This one-year fellowship is an intensive immersion into the world of glaucoma with a busy clinical and surgical practice. Much of the clinical experience is centered at the UNC Kittner Eye Center, a stand-alone ophthalmology clinic with two minor rooms located in Chapel Hill. Most surgeries are performed at UNC Hillsborough Hospital (15 minutes from Kittner) and occasionally at the UNC Main Hospital (10-15 minutes form Kittner). Here are summarized highlights of the program:
We love our fellows and look forward to welcoming you to beautiful Chapel Hill.
- Surgical volume tends to hover around 20-30 trabeculectomies (limbus-based, fornix-based, ExPress and traditional), 80-100 tubes (ClearPath, Ahmed, Baerveldt), 30-40 MIGS surgeries (Hydrus, KDB, Trabectome, iStent) and 80-100 cataracts; EUAs, lasers (LPI, ALPI, SLT, YAG), choroidal drainage, tube/trab revisions, cleft repairs, iris repairs, etc.
- Each faculty with significantly different management and surgical approaches to glaucoma
- Twice monthly glaucoma service rounds led by fellow and/or resident on service
- Journal club four times per year
- The salary is $60,000 for the year
- Year-round glaucoma call behind the residents (always backed up with assigned attendings)
- Faculty call shared with faculty and retina fellow; primary call taken by residents
- Staffing resident glaucoma clinics once per week
- Fellows have a half clinic (comprehensive) per week
- Autonomy is gradual - at the end of the year, the fellows essentially function as seasoned glaucoma specialists
- Research is not required, but encouraged; a final presentation of a scholarly activity is required at end of year
We love our fellows and look forward to welcoming you to beautiful Chapel Hill.
