It wasn’t something I gave much thought to until I completed my masters degree and had some publications. I met my partner in graduate school and he was very adamant about wanting me to take his last name once we got married.
I think this is really based on what’s important to you. For me, the emphasis was on whether I went through medical school myself or with a supportive,committed partner. That was how I made my decision. For example, if I start medical school without a ring and make it past the first 2 year without one then I’m not changing my name regardless ion whether we dated for a long time. At most, I would consider to hyphen it.
This was the deal I made with my partner and he took it quite well considering his strong opinion on the matter.
